Connect & Learn: Working effectively with people with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, presented by Andy Bouwman and Kat Kahler on the 8th of March 2022
In our presentation we will provide an overview of the diagnostic criteria for BPD, how to recognise these symptoms as they present in professional settings, the principles of working effectively with people with a diagnosis of BPD, and when and how to make referrals to relevant specialist services (including Spectrum).
Overview
This presentation will be appropriate for those with a beginning understanding of or who would like to know more about BPD. Specialist training is available at Spectrum for those interested in extending their skills in this area.
Objectives
1. Understanding of the diagnostic criteria for BPD
2. Ability to recognise the symptoms of BPD and associated formulations.
3. Explain the principles of effective therapeutic relationships.
4. Awareness of supports available to people with BPD and criteria for referrals to specialist services.
About the presenters
Andy Bouwman is a mental health social worker with 10 years of experience working in public mental health services in Victoria. He has worked within community and acute teams and has developed a solid understanding of working with clients with BPD in a variety of settings. Andy is a member of the ACT team at Spectrum, providing individual therapy and group programs using this framework. He is passionate about sharing his experience and knowledge with other clinicians
Kat Kahler is a qualified mental health nurse with over 15 years of experience working in acute and therapeutic settings in Victoria, interstate and overseas. Over the past few years, she has worked as an emergency mental health clinician in a Metro Melbourne hospital whilst also working part-time at Spectrum and in private practice. Kat enjoys providing clinicians with a space where they can reflect and learn and as such runs a variety of training courses within Spectrum.
