DirectLine is a key component of Victoria’s state-wide alcohol and drug network and provides 24-hour telephone counselling, information and referral service for anyone in Victoria wishing to discuss an alcohol or drug-related issue.
Data on the harms related to alcohol, illicit and pharmaceutical drug use in Victoria including DirectLine calls are provided through aodstats.org.au. This information provides a convenient statistical and epidemiological resource for policy planners, drug service providers, health professionals and other key stakeholders.
The latest AODstats bulletin, provided to subscribers of the site, includes DirectLine data from 2021 which showed there were 14,274 alcohol and drug-related telephone and counselling referral services handled by Directline. Of this, 44 per cent related to alcohol, 30.7 per cent to illicit drugs and 25.3 per cent to pharmaceutical drugs. Both alcohol and pharmaceutical drugs increased from 2020 by 2.7 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively, while illicit drugs were down 5.2 per cent on 2020.
