Expert-endorsed cognitive rehabilitation interventions for addiction

31 May 2024

A new article in the World Psychiatry journal describing 4 expert-endorsed cognitive rehabilitation interventions for substance use disorder was the focus of a recent Connect & Learn webinar.

Rehabilitation Interventions

Presented by Professor Antonio Verdejo-García, the lead author of the article, the webinar provided an overview of the 4 four neuroscience-informed interventions for addiction treatment:

  • cognitive bias modification
  • contingency management
  • emotion regulation training
  • cognitive remediation.

The first intervention, cognitive bias modification, uses computerised cognitive training to reset drug-related biases and is an approach that Turning Point researchers led by Professor Victoria Manning have developed and proven effective in a number of studies in different populations and settings.

During the webinar, Professor Verdejo-García outlined the rationale and mechanisms engaged by these interventions, evidence of their efficacy, and the steps needed to incorporate them into routine clinical practice.

The article also offers recommendations on how to overcome implementation challenges, with its authors envisioning a future where cognitive rehabilitation is embedded in routine practice to maximise the health and well-being of individuals with addiction.
