About 1 in 2 people in addiction treatment settings have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet integrated treatment is not routinely available.

Overview

Through an exploration of co-occurring trauma and addiction, this webinar will provide participants with the opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of the current evidence-based psychological treatment approaches, and the challenges for implementation in routine care settings.

Objectives

1. Develop an understanding of the presenting issues experienced by people living with co-occurring addiction and survival of trauma, including PTSD and other trauma-related mental health comorbidities.

2. Identify a range of evidence-based treatment approaches for PTSD and co-occurring addiction.

About the presenters

Dr Shalini Arunogiri is a consultant addiction psychiatrist and clinician researcher. She is Deputy Clinical Director at Turning Point and Deputy Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Central Clinical School, Monash University. Shalini is Chair of the RANZCP Binational Faculty of Addiction Psychiatry. Shalini's clinical and research interests include methamphetamine use and mental health problems, and women’s health and addictive disorders. She is an investigator on multiple Australian clinical trials of medication treatments for addiction, including the N-ICE and LiMA trials for methamphetamine use disorder. She is also mum to an energetic five year-old boy and a passionate advocate for women in medicine and academia.

Dr Jennifer Nation is a clinical psychologist working in the Turning Point COPE program delivering a concurrent treatment for PTSD and substance use disorders. She has worked with people with addictions for ten years including as a clinician on the Ready2Change Alcohol trial and the LIMA trial for methamphetamine use disorder. Jennifer’s doctoral research investigated the relationship between forgiveness and wellbeing and she has an ongoing interest in the interactions between psychological and physiological health and wellbeing.
